Custom Birthstone Rings: A Personal Touch to Your Engagement Story
“Birthstones! We all have one because we all have a birthday” – Mariam Song
So profound. Mind is blown 🤯
One of the sweetest ways to personalize your engagement ring or wedding band is by incorporating your birthstone, your partner’s, or even both!
That said—speaking sincerely from experience—if your partner dislikes a certain colour, whether it’s their birthstone or yours, it’s best to leave it out. Colours are powerful and emotionally charged, and even a subtle hint of an unliked shade can be too distracting in a ring meant to be cherished forever.

Gentle Disclaimer:
We’ll be focusing only on precious stones for each birth month. This is because we prioritize durability, ensuring that the stones we use are hard enough to withstand everyday wear in your custom birthstone engagement rings or wedding bands. After all, these gems are meant to last a lifetime. ❤️
January To December: Birthstone Engagement Rings Tell Your Colour Story
January - New year, new gym membership, fresh hope for the year ahead.

January’s birthstone is garnet!
The most traditional garnet is the Mozambique garnet, which boasts a stunning scarlet red with some stones having an almost burnt orange hue to them.
If you’re looking for something with a deeper, more sophisticated tone, you can opt for rhodolite garnet, which features a beautiful wine-like, purply mauve color.
February - The month of L.O.V.E.

Speaking of purple—let’s move on to the month of LOVE!
February’s birthstone is amethyst, a stone with a deeply rich, saturated, regal purple.
Half of Engage’s team, including our co-founder Ji, has birthdays in February, so it’s a month full of beautiful purple hues for us!

March -
Wearing a piece of the sea

Aquamarine! The word aquamarine comes from the Latin words “aqua” (meaning “water”) and “marina” (meaning “of the sea”). It’s literally named after sea water! Take a moment to envision yourself wearing a stone that has the colour of the sea water.
The nature of this blue stone engagement ring is so powdery and watery that in certain lighting settings it almost looks like a white stone with a blue tinge to it.
April -
Diamond baby, you’re a star!

April is diamond! Okay not ALL birthstones are colourful. But diamond baby – you sure are beautiful. The word diamond is so associated with engagement rings that maybe some meaning has been lost. What makes it unique isn’t just its hardness or sparkle—it’s the way it bends and reflects light unlike any other stone.
Each diamond is essentially a tiny time capsule, older than most stars in the sky. Scientists have even found tiny traces of Earth’s earliest atmosphere trapped inside some diamonds, making them not just beautiful but also a record of ancient history.
Lab grown diamonds have the same DNA as natural, without the waiting millions of years and digging to the depths of the earth part.
Does that make sense? If not, let’s talk about it!
May - Garden of green

Emerald! That velvety saturated emerald green is like no other. You can tell an emerald green apart from other green stones just by looking at the depth of the green. The green of an emerald is rich, deep, and full of life—like a dense forest, or a flourishing garden.
A natural green emerald will have its own map of markings and cloudy areas, making each stone unique, while a lab grown green emerald carries a more consistent green throughout the stone.
June - The mysterious one

Alexandrite.
She’s the mysterious one. Alexandrite has such an iridescence to it that we call it the chameleon stone. There are hints of green, dark blues, purples, it really looks wildly different depending on the environment.
July -
“You had the power all along, my dear” - Glinda

Ruby is one of the most precious gemstones out there. Ruby’s red is fiery and intense, with an almost glowing core – like a glowing ember. The red is so vivid, it seems to come alive when you look at it.
August - Summer's stone

Peridot green is one of a kind. It’s not quite olive, not lime, and not tree green… but more like the vibrant green of a grassy meadow. Imagine tender grass only a couple of weeks old, and you’re running through it—that’s the kind of green peridot brings to mind.
Or a grape! It’s refreshing like a grape.
It’s perfect for a lively, nature-inspired engagement ring.
September - The regal stone

Phew! The seasons are changing in the blink of an eye. As the leaves turn vibrant colors, perhaps our lives are slowing down along with the cooling weather.
September’s birthstone is sapphire, and it’s a truly regal stone. The traditional sapphire hue is a deep, saturated blue, like the one seen in Princess Diana’s iconic oval engagement ring.
Blue is just “meh” to you? Don’t worry. Sapphires are incredibly versatile and come in a wide array of colors—peach, green, pink, purple, and more. Sapphires really are generous in their variety.
October - Watermelon Sugar

There are two birthstones in October! Pink and green tourmaline. If you love both those colours there’s also watermelon tourmaline, pink and green in one stone – best of both worlds.
Green tourmaline is one of the most sophisticated greens we’ve seen in a gemstone colour. It has more of an olive-y tone to it, you can really see the yellow undertones within the tourmaline green.
Pink tourmaline. Is this the perfect pink? We think yes. But we are open to having a healthy pink debate if you’re up for it. Pink is also our cofounder Mariam’s favourite colour, so that healthy debate may turn into a passionate tussle. What’s love without some healthy wrestling?
Moving right along 😉
November - Weather’s getting cold, but you’ve got a ray of sunshine

Orange enthusiasts and November babies hear hear! Your favourite colour comes in two different stones – citrine and orange topaz. What a treat.
Citrine. Not only does it have such a beautiful sounding name, its orange is like having a tiny capsule of sunshine on your hand.
Topaz in its purest form is a white palette stone. It’s clear! But it also comes in every colour under the rainbow. Orange topaz is a warm, golden honey orange. Depending on the stone it may even exhibit flashes of copper, burnt sienna, or even hints of peach, giving it a dynamic, almost glowing appearance.

December - You deserve three

We’ve made it all the way to December – we’re reflecting on the year, all the growth we went through, the ups and downs.
December baby, we don’t how this came to be but, you’ve got three birthstones!
Blue topaz, blue zircon, and tanzanite.
Here’s our theory. We believe you deserve three stones for your birthday, for all the times you’ve received your birthday present with Christmas wrapping paper on it, as some sort of Christmas birthday gift. We’re sorry.
Let’s talk about blue topaz.
Blue topaz is your classic, pastel baby blue. It’s somehow bright and cool at the same time, with almost an icy feel to it.
We also love topaz for custom birthstone rings because of its pricepoint.
It’s such a readily available stone that you could go significantly larger in size without breaking the bank. This way, we could craft your custom birthstone engagement rings by checking off size and colour from your wishlist. Love!
Blue zircon.
Totally different from the blue topaz. In this stone we get more teal to the blue. The teal hue brings the stone to life, reminiscent of the prettiest pool.
Tanzanite. Wow.
It has a mysterious, iridescent quality—shifting between shades of purple and blue as the light catches it from different angles.
Custom Birthstone Engagement Rings - How To Incorporate Colour Without It Being…Too Colourful
One of the most popular ways to make our custom birthstone rings —without taking attention away from the center stone—is what we call the “peek-a-boo” setting.
Take a look at these rings—notice the tiny pop of color visible from the profile view beneath the center stone? That’s a birthstone “peek-a-boo”! We can set your birthstone on one side and your partner’s on the other for that personal touch.
Another beautiful option is integrating the birthstones directly into the band. For example, the last stone on one side of the band could be your birthstone, while the last stone on the opposite side could be your partner’s.
Again, this is such a great way adding birthstones so subtly that your engagement ring is still reading as a classic design overall. Take a moment to picture this. You’re talking, perhaps painting an in depth picture of how your partner proposed to you and your hands are gesturing here and there. You see that main sparkle from your focal stone with just the hint of colour following it. That rhythm and dance of colour is what we’re going for. The best part? Between you and your partner, it’s more than just a splash of colour—it’s a constant, meaningful reminder of one another.
Finally, if you’re not ready to fully embrace color in your engagement ring, another beautiful way to incorporate your birthstones is by setting them on your wedding band. This is the perfect option if you want the sentiment of the birthstones while keeping your engagement ring a timeless, classic white stone palette, set with diamonds.
And that’s it! If you missed that mind blowing quote from Mariam earlier, we’re just going to give it to you again here. It’s just too profound to pass by.
